Due to a postponed game from the inclement weather last Friday, the Royals came into the week facing three consecutive days of Trinity League competition.
They began on Monday with a nail-biter against Santa Margarita. After nine scoreless innings Sarah Ellersick and Amelia Wiercioch led off with singles and junior Andi Hester came through with a walk-off double to give the Royals a 1-0 triumph at Fullerton College.
Back at Fullerton on Tuesday, the entire Rosary line-up contributed to a decisive 9-0 win over JSerra, with Mady Christensen breaking the Royal record for season RBI's with her 33rd and 34th of the year.
The stage was set for tonight's battle against Mater Dei at their home field, Thornton Park. The Monarchs drew first blood, scoring twice and challenging the Royals with a 2-0 deficit. In addition to pitching the complete game, Amelia Wiercioch had two run-scoring singles, tying the score up at 2-2.
The 5th inning was a big one for the Royals, with Marcy Moran and Mady Christensen getting on base and Andi Hester and Sarah Ellersick bringing them home. Ellersick's hit scored Hester, as well, putting the Royals ahead 5-2.
The Royals held on to their lead through the 5th, 6th and 7th innings, thanks to some impressive defensive plays by Gabby Mecado and Molly Pellkofer. Wiercioch had four strike-outs and pitched a terrific game for her 18th victory. It was a very good night to be a Royal.
The forced tie for 2nd place in the Trinity League was settled with coin flips. Neither flip went Rosary's way so there will be a contest Thursday, May 12th at 3:15 at Thornton Park against the Monarchs to settle the standings. The winner of that game will secure third place, and the loser will take fourth.
Our young women have most certainly showed their mettle this week. We have confidence in their ability to bring home a fourth victory!
