September Suicide Prevention Awareness

It is our goal to do what we can to ensure that students at Rosary are safe, happy, and healthy. Research shows that talking about suicide in an open and honest manner does not lead to more suicide. In fact, it leads to awareness and can give those struggling a way to share just how much they are hurting and get the help that they need.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States; second among people ages 10-14, 3rd among people aged 15-24, and 12th overall. Among those who die by suicide, 46% have a diagnosed mental health condition and 90% have experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. Thoughts of suicide can be frightening. By reaching out for help or checking in with friends and family, we can avoid devastating outcomes. An important first step of suicide prevention is recognizing the warning signs, taking them seriously, and knowing how to respond to them.

Let’s take this month as an opportunity to move toward ending the stigma around suicide prevention and be encouraged to be more open and honest with our loved ones when we are struggling and especially when we notice someone we love struggling. With the right tools and awareness, we can potentially save the lives of those we love.
